- A young Nigerian man canceled his wedding weeks before the ceremony.
- The cancellation was due to his fiancée’s family demanding an additional ₦1.5 million for food
- He had already paid a bride price of ₦3.5 million and covered all other wedding expenses.
A young Nigerian man called off his wedding just weeks before the ceremony after his fiancée’s family requested an additional ₦1.5 million for food, even though he had already paid a ₦3.5 million bride price.
The groom had taken care of all other wedding expenses, but he decided to cancel the marriage when the bride’s family refused to budge on their new demand. His fiancée’s lack of response during the disagreement added to his disappointment, despite his affection for her.
Sources revealed that the groom tried to negotiate, offering to manage the catering himself, but the family insisted that the ₦1.5 million payment was a mandatory tradition in their household.
Even with event planners hired and other costs settled, the bride’s family showed no signs of compromise.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user @itzchristunique, the groom voiced his frustration, emphasizing how hurtful it was that his fiancée stayed silent instead of helping mediate with her family.
The X post read:
“My friend’s brother, whose wedding was supposed to take place in December, just cancelled it. The family of his fiancée demanded he pay ₦1.5m for food to be served that day.”
“Meanwhile, he had already hired event planners to handle everything, including the food. He told them not to worry, but they insisted it was their family’s tradition. His biggest frustration is that his wife-to-be said nothing when he asked her to intervene.”
“When I asked my friend if there was more to this, she said yes. Her brother had already paid over ₦3.5m as bride price and other expenses. He’s frustrated about the entire marriage process even though he still loves the girl deeply.”
“Well, I support him 100 percent because why would your family be so demanding and you say nothing about it?”
