The 2025 edition of the U-19 Nigeria’s Independence Cup ended in thrilling fashion, yesterday with Imo State staging a dramatic comeback to defeat Kebbi State 2-1 to claim the coveted trophy.
The grand finale, held at the Training Pitch 2 of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, brought together two teams that had already faced each other in the group stage, where Kebbi triumphed 2-1.
The repeat encounter promised fireworks, and both sides delivered a pulsating contest filled with tactical brilliance and youthful flair.
Against the run of play, in-form striker Tasleem Bala struck in the 27th minute to put Kebbi State ahead, taking his tournament tally to four goals. With their earlier group-stage victory in mind, Kebbi looked poised to cruise to the title.
But Imo State roared back before halftime. Their equaliser came in the 38th minute through Udeh Excellent, who calmly slotted home to restore parity. The scoreline remained 1-1 at the break, leaving both sides with everything to fight for.
The second half saw relentless end-to-end action as both teams pressed for a decisive goal. The breakthrough came in the 71st minute when Wisdom Omorodion executed a brilliant lob after a slick one-two exchange with teammate Josiah Igwe, sparking wild celebrations from the Imo bench.
