Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has stated that President Bola Tinubu is seeking a more transparent election in 2027.

Speaking during a meeting with a European Union delegation in Abuja, Abbas explained that the National Assembly is amending the Electoral Act of 2022 to improve credibility and transparency in future elections.

He noted that concerns raised by international observers after the 2023 elections are being considered in these reforms.

Abbas highlighted the administration’s commitment to enhancing electoral processes and mentioned that both Senate and House leadership met last week to address differences on the proposed amendments.

“I want to acknowledge that the leadership of the country under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is very committed to ensuring that we improve on our electoral processes, particularly regarding the observations made (by international observers) in the 2023 election,” Abbas said.

“We in the National Assembly have also been busy working to gather as many issues as possible arising from the last elections, so that we can see how we can legislatively address them, so that our next election will be more transparent, acceptable, and in alignment with international standards.”
Abbas requested the EU delegation’s support for the National Assembly in advocacy and public outreach, stressing the importance of alignment with the House of Assembly on reforms.

The leader of the delegation and EU Parliament member, Barry Andrews, praised the Assembly for its role in enhancing democracy.

The delegation included EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot, election experts Ralph-Michael Peters and Eirini-Maria Gounari, election administration expert Maros Gabriel, Democracy and Rule of Law programme manager Laolu Olawumi, and political adviser Osaro Odemwingie.
