The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced a one-week extension to the ongoing National Sports Federations’ Election process, following a surge in petitions and appeals from various constituencies and stakeholders across the country.

According to a statement issued on Monday, 6 October 2025, and signed by the Secretary of the 2025 Electoral Committee to the Boards of National Sports Federations, Mrs Rita Mosindi, the decision was reached to ensure that all complaints arising from the exercise are duly addressed before the final phase of the elections.

The Commission said the extension was necessary to uphold fairness, inclusiveness, and integrity in the electoral process.

It noted that the move would provide adequate time for the review and resolution of all post-election appeals before the conclusion of the entire exercise.

“The National Sports Commission is committed to conducting a process that reflects transparency and justice. The extension will allow the Electoral Committee to attend to every petition and ensure that the outcomes are credible and accepted by all,” the statement read in part.

The Electoral Committee, chaired by Dr Simon Ebhojiaye, also released a revised election timetable to reflect the adjusted dates.

Under the new schedule, the publication of the eligible list of candidates will now take place on 22 October 2025, followed by the oral interviews for presidential and vice-presidential candidates on 23 October.

The national elections for the Boards of the National Sports Federations are fixed for 25 October at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, with the inauguration of the elected Boards to be held on the same day.

Subsequent hearings of petitions and appeals arising from the national elections have been slated for 1 November, while bye-elections, if required, will follow on 8 November 2025.

The Commission reaffirmed that its decision was guided by the need to maintain an open and credible process that gives all stakeholders confidence in the final composition of the sports federations.

It added that all parties are expected to adhere strictly to the revised timetable and cooperate with the Electoral Committee to ensure a smooth conclusion of the exercise.
