Kate Winslet almost had a royal fashion scare.
The Titanic star recalled her first meeting with King Charles III in 1995 that almost ended with NSFW wardrobe malfunction.
“The first time I met him, oh my goodness,” Kate recalled on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Nov. 18. “He came to support the premiere of Sense and Sensibility when I was only 20. And I sort of haven’t realized that we were really going to meet him. I forgot about the fact that I kind of was wearing a kind of a transparent lace outfit.”
Indeed, Kate’s quick thinking kept her from flashing the then-Prince of Wales while offering the traditional curtsy.
“And thank God I’d wore a coat,” the 50-year-old added. “Because as he making his way towards me, I’m like, ‘nipples, nipples.’ Basically, covering myself in a cape.”
In the end, Kate’s meeting with Charles—who became king in 2022 after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II—went so well, she’s been invited to meet him again and knew just how to coach Meryl Streep through her first royal encounter.
