Lagos continues to face persistent and increasingly severe flooding, creating significant challenges for residents searching for safe and suitable housing. To address this problem, Nigerian innovator Kayode Femi Amoo (Nifemi Alpine) has officially launched Lagos Floodmap, an Artificial Intelligence-powered platform designed to help residents identify flood-prone areas before making rental or purchase decisions.

According to Amoo, the idea for Lagos Floodmap emerged from personal experiences while trying to secure accommodation in Lagos. He encountered mouldy apartments, water-damaged buildings, and flooded access roads—situations that highlighted how difficult it was for residents to verify a property’s environmental risks before committing to it.

“We saw that people were making long-term housing decisions without reliable information,” Amoo said. “Flooding affects many parts of Lagos, yet the risks are not always disclosed. Lagos Floodmap was created to give people the clarity they need before choosing where to live.”

A Technology-Driven Approach to a Widespread Challenge

Lagos Floodmap uses Artificial Intelligence and publicly available environmental data to help residents check the flood risk associated with any address in seconds. Users simply paste an address into the platform to receive an instant flood-risk assessment presented in an easy-to-understand format.

The tool aims to provide clarity in a real estate market where environmental information is often overlooked or unavailable. For residents unfamiliar with a neighbourhood, Lagos Floodmap offers a practical way to avoid avoidable costs and risks when renting or buying property.

Enhancing Transparency in the Real Estate Market

The launch of Lagos Floodmap also addresses a broader structural problem: the absence of accessible environmental data in property evaluation. By offering location-specific flood insights, the platform introduces a level of transparency that has traditionally been missing from Lagos’ real estate ecosystem.

Amoo noted that the platform is expected to help shift expectations across the sector. “People want accurate information before they make any major housing decision,” he said. “By making flood risk easy to check, we are helping users ask the right questions and make more informed choices.”

Supporting Developers, Buyers, and Renters Alike

Beyond individual users, Lagos Floodmap provides value to real estate developers and agents who want to incorporate environmental risk analysis into their planning and sales processes. With flooding becoming a more frequent concern across Lagos, the availability of flood-risk data supports better site selection and more sustainable development practices.

Availability

Lagos Floodmap is now officially available to the public and can be accessed via the platform’s website.
