A Nigerian man has sparked discussion online after criticizing pastors who regularly use their wives as negative examples during sermons.
Sharing his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), he expressed discomfort over the growing trend, saying it is humiliating to see pastors subtly mock their own spouses just to make a point during preaching.
He stressed that pastors did not marry their wives to turn them into unfavorable case studies on the pulpit. According to him, if a pastor cannot confidently refer to his wife as “the best thing that happened to him after salvation,” then she should not be mentioned in his messages at all.
The man added that regardless of a pastor’s intentions, once he starts pointing out his wife’s shortcomings, the congregation stops paying attention to the sermon and begins focusing on the ridicule instead.
His post quickly gained traction, drawing widespread agreement from Nigerians who believe many pastors need to be more mindful. Some commenters noted that church leaders should set positive examples and protect their families rather than expose them.
One person wrote, “Omo, this is so true! Pastors drag their wives too much on the pulpit.” Another said, “Respect starts from the pulpit. Preach Christ, not your wife’s mistakes.”
The discussion has continued online, with many calling on pastors to establish healthier boundaries and honor their wives both publicly and privately.
