- She argued that decentralizing policing is crucial to prevent security threats rather than merely reacting to them.
Honourable Kafilat, the lawmaker representing Kosofe Federal Constituency in Lagos, has intensified her call for the establishment of state police, arguing that state governors must assume greater direct responsibility for security across the nation.
Her demand comes amid rising concerns over banditry and mass abductions, particularly following recent rescue operations. The lawmaker specifically questioned the effectiveness of the current security strategy:
“We’ve seen the children. Where are their abductors?”
Hon. Kafilat stressed that the presidency alone cannot handle the complex security challenges facing the country. She insisted that state executives need to step up their efforts to safeguard their territories, stating:
“We need our governors to do more. The president cannot be everywhere, he cannot be in Sokoto, he cannot be in Zamfara, he cannot be in Ogun, and he cannot be in Lagos, his own state. We need our governors to do more.”
The lawmaker argued that a decentralized policing structure is critical to empower states to respond more swiftly to threats like kidnappings and school abductions. She explained that local authorities possess a superior understanding of their communities, making them better positioned to gather intelligence and deploy resources effectively.
