- Meta will soon introduce a £2.99 monthly subscription for UK users to access Facebook and Instagram without ads.
- The company said the plan offers “a clear choice” on data use, though users may have no option for “less personalised” adverts.
- The move follows similar steps in the EU after regulatory concerns.
Facebook and Instagram users in the UK will soon pay a monthly fee to enjoy ad-free access.
According to the BBC, Meta, parent company of the platforms, said it would begin notifying users in the coming weeks. While EU users will pay from €5.99 (£5) a month, UK users are expected to pay from £2.99.
“It will give people in the UK a clear choice about whether their data is used for personalised advertising, while preserving the free access and value that the ads-supported internet creates for people, businesses and platforms,” Meta said.
However, UK users may have no option to avoid paying and simply see “less personalised” adverts.
The move follows concerns raised by regulators. Meta had earlier introduced the feature in the EU, while the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) also published guidance on ad-free subscriptions this year.
