Media personality Daddy Freeze has opened up about what led him away from attending church. The controversial religious critic recounted how, during his divorce, his pastor instructed him to start sitting at the back of the church.
Speaking on the ‘With Chude’ podcast, Daddy Freeze explained how he felt been rejected by his church at one of the most difficult times in his life.
“Divorcees and separated women are ostracized by the church,” he said. “And I believe that’s one of the reasons why Osinachi died. The church is not going to chase you for divorcing, but are they going to allow you to be the lead singer?”
He explained that divorcees and separated women are often stigmatized within religious circles, describing how his once-close relationship with his pastor changed dramatically after his marriage ended.
He further explained:
“It happened to me. I was very cool with my pastor then. When I was going through my divorce, it was one of the things that drew me away from the church. My pastor said, ‘Yeah, you can come to church, but you know you’re going to sit at the back!’”
The outspoken broadcaster reflected on how this experience made him question the church’s inclusivity. He referenced the biblical story of the woman at the well in John chapter 4 to make his point, saying:
“I’m going through a divorce and getting married to somebody else, so that means I can’t bring the person to this church again? Then I remembered John 4, the woman at the well who had had five husbands and was living with one who wasn’t her husband. That is so powerful. I’ve only divorced once.”
Daddy Freeze, known for his bold critiques of traditional religious doctrines, clarified that his message is not one of rebellion but of compassion and authenticity.
