S’West citizens, govt engagement summit shifted to October 29

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has dismissed critics questioning his appointment to the Federal Executive Council (FEC), insisting that his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has never wavered despite earlier political setbacks.

Adelabu, who was the Accord Party’s (AP) governorship candidate in the 2023 election, therefore, declared his intention to contest the 2027 gubernatorial poll on the platform of the APC.

The minister urged party members to promote unity and avoid divisive rhetoric that can weaken the party ahead of future elections. In another development, the Steering Committee of the South-West Citizen-Government Engagement Summit has postponed the event earlier billed for October 9–10, 2025, to October 29–30, 2025.

The committee said the summit, themed “Strengthening Democracy Through Dialogue: Assessing Progress, Charting the Future,” would still be held at the International Conference Centre (The Dome), Akure, Ondo State, with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the Chief Host.

According to a statement signed by the Committee’s Chairman, Dr Akin Onigbinde (SAN), participants who had received invitations are expected to attend on the new dates, with arrivals scheduled for October 28.

Onigbinde said that the decision to postpone the summit was taken to allow more time for consultations with ministries, agencies, and other stakeholders across the six South-West states.

He, however, apologised for any inconvenience caused by the postponement, assuring that the summit would provide an inclusive and impactful platform for citizen-government engagement in the region.

The two-day event, organised by Afenifere, in partnership with the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission, is designed as a non-partisan forum for dialogue between government officials and citizens.

The event will feature six thematic sessions on fiscal reforms, economic development, social services, infrastructure, human capital development, and security and governance.
