The new Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman, Tanimu Turaki, renewed his urgent appeal to President Donald Trump and world leaders to help save Nigeria’s democracy, insisting that the current political tension demands immediate global attention.
Turaki argued that the deep internal crisis within the PDP—highlighted by a chaotic clash at the party headquarters—demonstrates the severe threats facing the nation’s governance system.
The chairman spoke while reacting to chaos that followed the police takeover of the PDP national headquarters in Abuja, which worsened the feud between factions loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and supporters of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
Turaki warned that the situation must not be ignored by partners who care about efforts to save Nigeria democracy. He explicitly called on the former US President:
“I want to call on President Trump, what is at stake, is not just genocide against Nigerian Christians, you should come and save democracy in Nigeria. Democracy is under threat. I’m calling on all other develop nations, all advance democracies, come and save Nigeria.”
Turaki accused Wike of allegedly leading armed thugs with the support of police officers to create confusion at the PDP secretariat, claiming such actions represent clear attempts to intimidate party members.
Insisting that his faction would resist any attempt to undermine democratic values, the PDP chairman stated:
“I have said it before, we are willing to lay down our lives to protect our office, to protect our democracy and to protect our mandate.”
He urged the international community to monitor the situation closely and intervene where necessary.
