In other news…. Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has made a dramatic declaration, vowing to resign from office if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu fails to secure victory in Edo State during the 2027 presidential election.

The Governor made the commitment during an interview with veteran journalist Babajide Otitoju, asserting that the political climate in Edo State has decisively swung in Tinubu’s favour.

Governor Okpebholo credited the President’s impact for his own administration’s success, claiming Tinubu’s popularity now surpasses his own in the state. He expressed absolute confidence in the expected 2027 outcome:

“I’m telling you. You will see the kind of result that will come out from here because there’s no opposition here in Edo.”

After being cautioned by the interviewer against such a dramatic pledge, the Governor doubled down on his commitment:

“If Asiwaju does not win here, I will resign as governor. I am telling you. I am the one telling you. There is no election here for him. My brother, forget it.”

The Governor dismissed the opposition, particularly supporters of former Governor Godwin Obaseki and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He contended that Obaseki’s record would prevent his political return:

“You cannot scam Edo and come back here… His poor record will not make him to come.”

Okpebholo attributed Tinubu’s guaranteed victory to federal infrastructural projects, such as flyovers and road constructions, which he claimed are highly cherished by Edo residents. He also dismissed the relevance of the Labour Party in the state’s current political structure.

Describing his own political style, Governor Okpebholo stated: “My style is not thuggery. It is grassroots. You don’t see me with elites; you see me with ordinary people on the streets.”
